What is a Functional Medicine Health Coach, anyway?

 

Quick Answer:  It gives real, solid solutions to real problems.

 

First of all, Functional Medicine signals that you look at the whole body, not just the place where you have symptoms.  Usually a typical doctor will acknowledge your symptoms, diagnose, then use the standard protocol of treatment for that diagnosis.

 

In Functional Medicine, it goes a step deeper.  Through detailed history of the patient’s life, illnesses and major events, in addition to past and present diet and lifestyle, your symptoms are mixed in s the doctor can figure out the cause of your symptoms, and then treat the cause instead of the symptoms.

 

Using this way of treatment can actually make you well, instead of just temporarily keeping your symptoms at bay. 

 

Many times Functional Medicine treatments can eliminate the cause of the problem and the symptoms will go away without any medicine at all, but with only practical lifestyle changes.

So, I am a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach.  My coaching is based on Functional Medicine principles that actually improve health and life.

 

My focus is mainly on

Your Nutrition

Your Stress Level

Your Sleep, and

Exercise.  I also include relationships, and I have recently added toxins since they are so prevalent in our lives.

 

With my coaching, you learn how small changes in the way you eat and the way you live your life can improve and sometimes actually reverse illnesses—even chronic illnesses.

 

So many times the symptoms have no visible connection to the cause of illness.  During my own time of illness, I never heard an encouraging word about healing from my doctors.  “Try this.”  “Try that.”  Finally, from all my questioning, I got a faint clue: possibly autoimmune-related.

 

Me: “What causes autoimmune?” 

Dr: “There is no known cause”

Me: “What can be done for it?”

Dr: “There is no cure.”

When I first saw my Functional Medicine Doctor, I asked, “Can you please make me feel better?”

His answer:  “Why don’t we just make you well

This was my first and only hope from the medical community.

In about 3 months, my symptoms were gone.

 

I am not being critical of doctors.  We need them.  They help us.  They’ve helped me at times.  But they have almost zero training in health.  And “after the fact” I see, we must have “health” to make ourselves healthy.  What a thought!

I offer a relaxed atmosphere for us to talk through your health issues, and we focus on changes you want to make that fit your life and your lifestyle.

I do not diagnose, treat, prescribe or recommend.  I do not recommend any specific diet or exercise routine.  I do not tell you (nor hold you to) what to eat or how to exercise. 

I offer education, encouragement, options, and suggestions if you want, along with support in a “no judgment” zone. 

No extremes; no guilt; no overwhelm.

 

Healing does not have to be complicated or extreme.  It’s not always easy, but it’s so exciting as we meet those first goals, and then as we move on to the next ones!

 

In our sessions we discover any lifestyle habits that when improved, will improve your health and your life.

 

I guide, educate and encourage with clear options and steady support.

I had spent several years with severe symptoms, and had seen different doctors and specialists with no positive results or even any hope of healing before I found functional medicine.  Functional Medicine took away my symptoms within 3 months of changing some of my habits and my eating.

 

After those experiences, I knew I wanted to help other people find their way to health without experiencing that frustration.

 

I graduated from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy in 2019.  My coaching style is calm and relaxed with practical ideas for change—and with no judgment, and with no criticism when hurdles come up or mid-steps happen.

 

My clients have experienced marked improvement in almost every case.

These are the coaching sessions that I offer:

 

Individual one-on-one coaching with

a 4-week package is priced through March at $300 (typical cost-$350)

In-Person Group Coaching

9 Individual Group Sessions per year.

Sessions are typically on Saturday mornings and last about 2 hours

Sessions include a healthy light lunch.

These groups usually have 5-10 in attendance, including men and women who want to know more about changes they can make to become healthier and more productive.

 

I bring education around a specific topic, and we discuss the real-life issues surrounding it, coming up with solutions.

The sessions are very relaxed, positive and interactive.

 

Occasionally I will have a guest who presents some information and knowledge about their own expertise.  We’ve had people helping with essential oils, yoga, massage, supplements, and occupational therapy, and others.

 

The cost for these group sessions is presently at $50.

It will be on Saturday, February 21, at 10 am in Mena, Arkansas.

 

It’s about learning the difference in the status quo (which usually includes low energy, brain fog, aches and pains and/or poor sleep) compared to extra energy, more productive living and the ability to spend more time enjoying your life.
